Too Smart for God?

ChildWith all my heart I desire to connect with God. I didn’t always understand that it was actually a really simple process. It might not be easy, but it is simple. It might take a life-time to master, but Jesus made it clear in this prayer He prayed which was recorded by Matthew in chapter 11:

‘Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank You for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased You do it this way.’

Jesus continued, to His disciples:

My Father has entrusted everything to Me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.”

What does it take to connect with God, our creative designer of infinite intelligence and complexity?

We have to admit we don’t know everything. As long as we think we are really really smart we won’t see the way to God.

I pray that everyone who reads these words would simply ask themselves,

  • Do I think I am smarter than God?
  • Do I think I know better than Him what to do?
  • Do I put more faith in men and their design than in God?
  • Do I think I can understand everything in history without God?

God is looking for childlike hope and trust in Him. He will never disappoint. He doesn’t mind if you want to take a very small baby step in His direction. He can handle that. He is looking for those small steps!

Child 2Jesus’ message was simple, but His action was powerful. Jesus’ life, death and resurrection are the reason we can have that childlike faith and approach God. You can read all about it in the collection of ancient writings we call the Bible. I hope you do.

If you have been helped in any way through my musings, please give glory to God. If you find anything disappointing or offensive – please let me know so I can improve

  3. I was raised Christian at one time was born again.. but as i grow older and wiser i find it hard to believe in it. There is to many reasons that point to the fact that it is a made up story of information peace together from many older religions. The main reason i have issues is the violence and death in the bible is to me barbaric and to out of date with modern views. such as the only way for forgiveness is through bloodshed. Problem is whatever you or i say there is a verse in the bible to counter it or prove it. The serious issue i have is that if you take the bible literally as it is written you would end up with crazy militant people killing in the name of god anyone that does not believe.. We have enough of that already. I think it is time to put religion to bed and embrace peace love and knowledge.
I am not against people that do believe but i just do not understand why they do…

    • Thanks for taking the time to comment Andy.

Many of us were taught a lot of things as children that we need to think through for ourselves. It is certainly true that people interpret the Bible to support many different views. I have found reading many parts of the Bible together gives me a better understanding of the work of God throughout history.

I guess the biggest clincher for me is the fact that Jesus came to earth with a plan. This was predicted by hundreds of prophesies over many hundreds of years. During his time on earth, Jesus predicted his suffering, his death and his resurrection. His resurrection was attested to by many witnesses. When someone rises from the dead after predicting that they would do so, it catches my attention.

It would be wonderful if everyone would embrace peace, love & knowledge, but it seems that even with our best efforts most of us are not even able to live up to our own standards of right behavior. Our world is obviously a very messed up place with wars, greed, tragedy and suffering. People don’t seem to be able to put peace, love and knowledge into practice very well.

I have personally experienced the peace of Jesus in forgiving my sins and transforming my life. The longer I walk with Him, the more I realize my need for His presence in my life.

I’m glad you found my post and I would be happy to discuss these things further if you desire. I also have some great resources you might find thought provoking, like this collection of 9 talks exploring faith: http://northpoint.org/messages/starting-point-series/.

  9. I don’t think you are doing this here, exactly, but I’ve heard people use this same reasoning for why we should accept certain doctrines to us that seem dark. They claim, “His ways are higher than ours.” I think we do know what is hidden, love, and that’s why we are accountable. I think we are to use are minds to love him with all our hearts and reject what to us seems bad, not because we think we are smarter, of course, but, because we are convinced of the love of God and that there is nothing that can separate us from it. 🙂
